PANHANDLE (Spc) - Samuel R. Lanning, 85, formerly of Panhandle, died Sunday in Las Cruces, N.M.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Panhandle with the Rev. Steve Vernon officiating. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery under the direction of Smith/Fox Funeral Home.

Lanning was born Sept. 4, 1899 in Rogers, Texas. Following his discharge from the U.S. Army after World War I, he worked in the Hutchinson County oilfield. He moved to Panhandle in 1924 and worked for Mullins Grocery.

He married Eunis LaRue Aug. 16, 1925, and worked for B.C. True Truck and Equipment Co.

He was owner and operator of the Texas Hotel from 1943 until 1974, and was owner and operator of Panhandle Lumber and Supply from 1958 until 1965.

Lanning was Precinct I justice of the peace in Panhandle from 1946 through 1958. In 1945, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for service to Troop 1 of the Panhandle Boy Scouts.

He was a former member of the Panhandle School District Board of Trustees, past president of the Panhandle Lions Club, past commander of the Kit Carson post of the American Legion, and member of the First Baptist Church of Panhandle.

Lanning moved to Boulder, Colo., six years ago, then moved to Las Cruces three years ago.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Bill Lanning of Boulder; a daughter, Doris Ann Batsen of New Mexico; one brother, Jack Lanning of Houston; two sisters, Viola Chaddwick of Dallas and Edith Sutherland of Bowie, Md.; and three grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Carson County Square House Museum.
