McMurray was 24, and living in Salina, Jefferson Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. M of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct. 22, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov. 25, 1861.

During his term of service, McMurray was promoted to Corporal on Sept. 1, 1863; to Musician on May 1, 1864; and finally to Farrier on Jan. 1, 1865.

He mustered out of the service with his company on Aug. 8, 1865, in Atlanta.
