LEWIS
Harry E. Lewis Jr., 60, of Zion, Illinois
died July 25,1977 at the Victory Memorial
Hospital in Waukegan, Illinois.
Mr. Lewis was born July 21, 1917 in
Pocahontas, Iowa and attended the
University of Illinois. He was an
accomplished musician, graduating from
the Norfolk School of Music. He served in
the Armed Forces for 13 years and was a
Veteran of Pearl Harbor. He was a
member of the Admiral's Band in Hawaii.
While in the armed forces he conducted
the European Symphony Orchestra, taught
at the Heidelberg University in Germany
and gave many command performances
on goodwill tours sponsored by our
government. After he left the Armed
Forces, he played with many big bands
and was a featured soloist along with
many top performers of that time. He
moved to Zion 20 years ago and most
recently was employed at the H.A. Friend
and Company in Zion. He was a member
of the First Methodist Church in
Champaign, Illinois where he lived before
moving to Zion.
Mr. Lewis is survived by a son, Harry
III, of Round Lake Park, Illinois; a
daughter, Kathy Lewis, of Waukegan; two
grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Sylvia
Lewis, of Zion; and three sisters, Mrs.
Freda Sperling, of Detroit, Michigan, Mrs.
Genevieve Leech, of Zion, and Mrs.
Richard (Patty) Bessey of Corning, New
York. He was preceded in death by his
father Harry Sr. and a brother, Charles.
Funeral Services will be held on
Thursday, July 28, 1977 at 2 p.m. from the
CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012
Sheridan Road, Zion, with the Rev. Daniel
Nowotarski officiating. Interrment will be in
Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion. Friends
may call at the Congdon Funeral Home
from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evening.
