Borger News Herald - October 18, 1973

Long-time Borger resident and minister, Rev. M.S.Groom, 101, died at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at Highland General Hospital in Pampa.

Funeral services for Rev. Groom, of 1306 Evergreen, will be at 11 a.m. Friday from Ed Brown & Sons Chapel of the Fountains with Dr. Bill Hobson, pastor of Gateway Baptist Church, officiating.

Interment will follow in Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Ed Brown & Sons Funeral Directors.

Rev. Groom was born Aug. 25, 1872 in Serepta, La., the son of an itinerant minister-farmer who moved with his family from Louisiana to Texas in 1872 in two ox carts.

He worked on the farm and had practically no opportunity for an education until he was grown. Rev. Groom learned to read at the age of 19 and later became a Bible student and Greek scholar.

Early in his life, he memorized the entire New Testament and later in life spent his time writing on religious subjects.

Rev. Groom attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene and Baylor University in Waco, and graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth in 1935 with a bachelor of theology degree.

He served as a Baptist minister for 62 years before retiring. He has been a resident of Borger since 1926 and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Rev. Groom was very active walking from six to eight miles per day.

Rev. Groom married the late Callie Parker on Nov. 19, 1903 in Hood County.

Survivors include a son James N. Groom of Page, Ariz.; three daughters, Mrs. F.C. Spence of Borger, Mrs. Loma Harrison of Simi Valley, Calif., Mrs. B.O. Barnes of Albuquerque, N.M.; eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Honorary casketbearers will be V.W. Fowler, Homer Moss, Ed Turner, Roy Brinson, C.L. McKay.

Gravesite Details

Callie was apparently buried in Whiterock Cemetery in Fannin County Texas, but there is a memorial marker for her at the foot of his grave in Highland Park Cemetery
