South Jr., Leslie

Leslie Earnest South Jr. was born to Addie Ayers South and Leslie Earnest South Sr. on Aug. 17, 1930.

He passed away May 4, 2010.

South grew up in the midst of the Great Depression in Abilene. His father was a farmer and his mother worked most of her life as a factory seamstress.

Before graduating from high school, South joined the United States Navy. He served our country overseas during the Korean War and later as a recruiter in Dallas.

While in the Navy, South met and married Dorothy Elaine Ingels of Dallas. From that marriage three children were born, Richard, Michael and Patrick.

Following his military service, South returned to Texas and immediately went to work as a salesman for Don Hicks at Hicks Printing Co. Through his hard work, South later bought the company from Hicks and operated it as South Press until 1991 when he sold the business to his son, Michael.

Dorothy and Les divorced in 1996, and Les embarked on a lifelong dream to own a ranch.

He bought land and cattle in Greenville and taught himself to run a cow-calf operation. He also raised and sold hay to his neighbors.

In 2000, Les met and later married Peggy Darlin of Sulphur Springs. Peggy and Les enjoyed the ranch, their bull dogs (and numerous stray dogs), as well as their participation at the Grace Family Church in Sulphur Springs where he served as a board member and head of the benevolence fund. Peggy and Les were inseparable up to the time Les died. Through his marriage to Peggy, Les enjoyed the companionship of Peggy's children, Jim, Gloria, Kim, Richard and Linda.

South is survived by his wife Peggy, his three children, eight grandchildren, as well as Peggy's five children, nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the West Oaks Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Al Davis officiating.

Military graveside honors by the Hopkins County Military Coalition will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

With Richard South, Michael South, Patrick South, Harrison South, Hank South, Brandon South, Cody South and Colby Parker serving as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be David Hallmark, Rick Russell, Don McDonald, Carl Galligher, Travis Patridge, Wayne Parker, Tom Noble, Allen Brackett.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
