MONTEZUMA, Ga. - Otella 'Ben' Amnor Sloan Washington, age 99, of Montezuma, GA, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 after an extended stay at The Oaks Nursing Home in Marshallville, GA. 'Mrs. Ben' was born on March 2, 1911 in Madisonville, TN. She obtained her teaching certificate from Hiawassee College and taught school for a number of years in Madisonville and Vonore, Tennessee. After teaching school in Tennessee, she became a First Sergeant's wife at Fort McClellan in Anniston, AL. In December of 1950, after retiring from the army, George and Ben became farmers in Macon County, GA until their retirement in 1976. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Montezuma. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Grady 'George' Washington; two brothers, Randall Wray Sloan, Dorsey Brown Sloan and three sisters, Louise S. Sloan, Nadine S. Greenlee, Ruby S. Vance. She is survived by her son, Randall G. Washington of Montezuma, GA; her daughter, Elizabeth Washington Pope and her husband James of North Augusta, SC; three grandchildren, Michael W. Pope and his wife Pamela, Jeffery S. Pope and his wife Virginia and Christina Pope Markwalter; six great grandchildren; Evan Michael Pope; Katheryn L. Pope, Heather E. Pope, Ashley C. Pope, Amnor B. Markwalter, Makayla B. Markwalter. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Thursday, May 6 in the Chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma. Dr. Randy Gregg and Rev. Roy Peterson will officiate. Burial will follow in Bertha Dozier Memorial Park Cemetery in Montezuma. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
