John H. Walter, 83, of Avalon Manor, Avalon, N.J., formerly of Whitehall Township, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, in Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, Cape May Courthouse, N.J. He was the husband of Mae G. (Grammes) Walter.

He was a music instructor and band director in the Whitehall- Coplay School District for 42 years until retiring. Previously, he was supervisor of music in the Allison Park Schools, Allegheny County, and director of music at Camp Miller, Shawnee-on-Delaware. He and his wife also formerly operated a music store in Egypt.

A 1937 graduate of what is now West Chester University, he completed graduate studies in music education at Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh.

He composed numerous concert band compositions, including the "March of the Rotarians" and "Whitehall Schools on Parade."

Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Howard and Cora (Houser) Walter.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member and past commander of Thurston Elmer Wood American Legion Post 198, Cape May Courthouse.

He was a past member of the Allentown Band and a founder and conductor of the Middle Township, N.J., concert band. He also designed the logo for the township flag and the great seal used on township police cars and other vehicles.

He was a 33rd degree Mason; a past president of the Avalon Square Club and Avalon Seniors, and a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association.

Survivors: Wife; twin daughters, Kathleen Dougherty of Macungie and Suzanne Callinan of Cape May Court House; sons, Dr. John Jr. of Philadelphia and Dr. Thomas of North Stonington, Conn.; a brother, William of Las Vegas, and seven grandchildren.
