Charles H Cates was a Civil War soldier Kentucky 17th Infantry CO E He was a Union soldier. The battery was organized Oct-Dec 1863 ar Camp Nelson and mustered under the command of Capt John J Hawes Attached to the North Central Ky ist Division Battery E ist Light Artillery mustered out of service on August 1 1865. The battery losy 10 men during service, all to disease.

Charles h cates was also married to Lucy Jones and had two children Charles gotten Cates and a daughter Lousanna Cates Cox. 1859-1928.
Charles second wife was Mary E Huskey They are both buried in Locust Hill Cemetery Evansville Indiana
