Funeral services for Hubert Eugene Wilson, 79, of Athens were held Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. John Walker officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. He died Thursday, March 25, at his home.

Mr. Wilson was a native of Tignall and was the son of the late A.L. and Effie Haralson Wilson. He retired after 36 years of service with Winn Dixie Stores, having managed stores in Elberton and Athens. He was a member of Beech Haven Baptist Church and the Senior Coed Sunday School Class. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 44th Infantry Division, 3rd army, in the European Theater. He received Three Bronze Stars in major battles. He was a member of the Athens Elks Lodge, Amerian Legion and VFW.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Laura Jackson Wilson; a daughter Geri W. Austin, Dayton, Ohio; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathi W. and James H. Nix, Hull; three grandchildren, Brandon N. Jones, Knoxville, Tenn., Jeff H. Nix and Laurie Beth Nix, Hull; and sister Elizabeth W. Turner of Athens.
