Louis W. "Lou" Darovec, 92, of Williamsville, IL died at 10:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 2, 2010, at St. John's Hospice.
Lou was born on March 23, 1918, in Springfield, IL, to the late Louis and Mary Kuznik Darovec. He married Norma Johnstone in 1959.
Louis is survived by his wife, Norma Darovec; one brother, Robert (Betty) Darovec of Rochester; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Juanita and Bill Gray and Lorelei (Tom) Little, both of Springfield. He was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Darovec.
Lou is a WWII veteran, serving in the Army from March 27, 1941, to July 14, 1945. He obtained the rank of First Sergeant and served overseas for 30 months in North Africa, Italy at the Anzio Invasion, Southern France Invasion, Germany and Austria. He received the Legion of Merit Medal, GO #59 HG ETOUSA April 1945, a Good Conduct Ribbon, Defense Service Ribbon, European African Medal, Eastern Theater Ribbon with one silver battle Star, one bronze battle star and a bronze arrow head along with four overseas service bars. He graduated from St. Barbara's School and Cathedral Boys High School. Mr. Darovec was a member of St. John Vianney Church in Sherman since 1959, where he was active in booking Big Bands for dances at the activity center. Lou and Norma also attended St. Patrick's Church in Elkhart. He was also a life member of the American Legion Post 32, VFW Post 10302, Catholic War Veterans-Bishop Joseph McNicholas Post 1916 and the Marian Council 3914 Knights of Columbus. Lou was formerly active in AARP, Postal Sunset Club and the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Lou retired from the US Postal service on October 31, 1979, where he worked for over 23 years as a letter carrier. He had also worked at Hummer Manufacturing and Allis Chalmers.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home, with prayers at 3:45 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at St. John Vianney Church in Sherman, with Monsignor Carl Kemme and Reverend Thomas Shaw and Deacon Dave Sorrell officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, with honors conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
Memorial contributions may be made for masses to St. John Vianney Church in Sherman, St. Patrick's Church in Elkhart or the Animal Protective League.
