Drowned Youth Buried Saturday
6 Classmates at High are Pallbearers
Details Given About Tragedy
Two Companions Narrowly Escaped Death; Exhausted When Rescued

Fish Creek – Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Fish Creek Baptist church for Warren Baxter, 26, Gibraltar High school graduate and popular local youth, who was drowned last week Thursday afternoon while trying to swim ashore after the small motorboat in which he and two others had been fishing had capsized. The Rev. Paul A. Feustel, pastor of the Baileys Harbor Lutheran church, officiated and interment was made in the Blossomburg cemetery at the state park beside the mother who died in 1923.
Six classmates of the drowned youth were pallbearers: Bruno and Jack Gannett, who were with Warren at the time of the tragedy; Joseph Bell, Sheldon Doughty, Merritt Churches and Roy Smith.
The entire village was shocked by the accident which took place off Friedman's point early Thursday afternoon. Warren started to swim for shore with Jack following close behind, but the latter returned to cling to the boat with his brother Bruno when he saw Warren go down and not come up. The cries for help were heard on the point, and a party consisting of James Hears [difficult to see correct name spelling in paper], James Conshendy and Duclon hurriedly took Freidman's speed boat and went to the rescue. Both boys were nearly exhausted from struggling to keep above water until help came and were in a very weakened condition when taken home. Nevertheless, they were back at the scene after changing their clothes, waiting for the recovery of their friend's body.
The coast guards from Baileys Harbor were called and with many others searched for the body which was found after two hours in about 15 feet of water by a boat occupied by Ed Henry, Tim McCummings, Charles Duclon, Joseph Duclon and Jack Gannet. Two doctors, one being Dr. Applebach, who spends the summer here, awaited the arrival of the body at the dock and worked over it for two hours before giving up hope of reviving life. No water was found in the youth's lungs, so it is believed his heart failed him.
Warren was the only child of Gustave and Gertrude Baxter and was born at Fish Creek May 2, 1907. He was graduated from high school here in 1926, and since then spent most of his time on the water. He was employed for a number of years by the Chambers Island association.
Coroner Elmer Christenson of Sturgeon Bay, who was notified by the coast guards when the body was recovered, decided that no inquest was necessary.
