Arthur James "Art" Poehls, 72, of Boulder City, died May 6, 2005, after a brief battle with brain cancer. He was born in 1933 in Page, N.D., and lived in Cloquet, Minn., until 1992. Art served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a retired Northwest Airlines Boeing 747-400 captain whose flying career spanned 47 years. He loved the responsibility of keeping his passengers safe, and when he retired from passenger flight, he continued to train other pilots in the flight simulator. For the past eight years he flew aircraft in need of repair and test flew DC-10's and 747's after heavy maintenance. He was blessed with the ability to fly until early March, as the oldest pilot ever to take to the skies for Northwest Airlines. Art enjoyed many hobbies. Aviation was his calling, and he had said many times that he never had to work a day in his life. His love for golf brought him to Southern Nevada in the fall of 1992, where he could golf year-round. He continued to down-hill ski, and enjoyed God's country hunting and fishing in Northern Minnesota. To have known Art is to have known a man of unparalleled character. He was generous, thoughtful, and energetic; most of all he was known for always putting the cares of others before his own. He was blessed to have made friends the world over and his knack for making others laugh is irreplaceable. Stories of his travels will be passed from friend to friend, generation to generation; in this way, he will continue to live. Even during his illness he did not lose his compassion for others and his strong will persevered to his final days at home, comforted by his family and many friends. Art was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Cloquet, Minn., the Boulder City Elks Lodge 1682, Sons of Norway Desert Troll Lodge 6-165 and life member of the VFW. He was also a member of the Boulder City Golf Club, Cloquet Country Club and Retired Northwest Pilots Association (RNPA).

He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Poehls; and father, Arnold Poehls. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Siri; four adopted children, Tonya Poehls, Catherine (Joshua) Hall, son, Darold "D.J.", and Dawn (Eric) Maunu; his brothers, Gordon and David Poehls; nephew, Duane; niece, Cindy; and four beautiful grandchildren, Terrell Conner, Skylah Conner, Sydney Hall and Madison Hall.

The family would like to thank the loving care we received from Nathan Adelson Hospice and especially his nurse, Anne. Her kind heart and soothing voice were a great comfort during our most difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 13, at Community Lutheran Church, 3720 E. Tropicana Ave., in Las Vegas. He will then take his final flight and return to Cloquet, Minn., for a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 12th Street and Doddridge Ave.
