The family lived in Conewago Twp, Adams County Pa from his birth to about 1860, where his father Charles was a farmer at the Conewago Chapel farm . By 1860, the family had moved to Gettysburg PA, where his father was listed as a farmer in 1860. In addition to the farm, the family lived in and operated the Globe Inn. The inn was located just east of the Gettysburg square, on York Rd. An historical plaque exists on the sidewalk, on the north side of York Rd
(I believe the street address is 10, and is now a bank).
Catharine Susan was the daughter of John Klunk and Mary A. Lawrence. Her family lived as farmers in Oxford Township, Adams Co, PA. with many relatives close by.
Jacob and Catharine were married February 4, 1862 at the Conewago Chapel. After marrying, they lived with Jacob's father Charles at the Globe Inn Gettysburg. They lived there through the Civil War (and Battle of Gettysburg), moving to York sometime between 1865 and 1870 (likely close to 1865).
After moving to York, Jacob operated a Grocery store on the corner of Princess St and Beaver St through at least 1873 and maybe as late as 1876. Leter Jacob holds a job of Street Sprinkler, which kept the dust from rising off of the dirt roads, and was living at South Penn St, where they would live though at least 1896.
He continued as a Street Sprinkler until about 1886. From here on, he begin listing his occupation as Driver, then Hack Driver, then Hackman, then Bus Driver, then Hacks, and finally Driver again. At some point prior to 1898 he owns his own "Baggage Transfer Service" According to his obituary, he was engaged in the cab business from 1881 until about 1904, when he sold out to The York Cab Company. By about 1882 – 1886 he is listed as a street sprinkler, so I'm guessing he was only part time during the early years, though he may have been sprinkling the street as part of being a cab?
