Nevada Roberts Blount

In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 2, 2010, Nevada (Roberts) Blount, 87, was reunited in Heaven with her husband of 63 years. She was born in Haynesville, La. on June 28, 1922. She moved to Rosepine at an early age and graduated from Rosepine High School where she excelled in basketball. She married Elmer C. Blount in 1941 and moved to Lake Charles when he was discharged from the Navy after WWII. She was a resident of Lake Charles for most of her life.

Mrs. Blount was a full-time homemaker, devoted to all children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always totally supportive of her children and their endeavors. She was active in PTA and Band Boosters for 25 years as her children went through school. Even though she never considered herself musical, she made every effort to expose her children to all types of music and was always there to encourage every performance. She served as a pre-school Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Lake Charles for almost 50 years and was a member there for over 60 years. During those years at First Baptist, she served as WMU president, Sunday School Teacher, and a member of several committees. She was also active with the Telephone Pioneers of America working with Special Olympics and Fishing Rodeos. She was an avid gardener and quilt-maker. She made a special quilt for each of her grandchildren and those will always be treasured. She was always creative at the sewing machine for her four daughters and provided a stable and loving environment for her five children. She had a passion for fishing with special skills in fly-fishing. Some of her best times were early morning fishing trips with her husband, Elmer, in the Big Burn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer C. Blount, and two brothers, Hiawatha Roberts and Loy Roberts. She is survived by four daughters: Mila Chesson and husband, Lynn, of Kinder, La; Sherry Benesh and husband, Bob, of Lake Charles; Lee Ann Smith and husband, Gary, of Baton Rouge, La.; Kathy Pardue and her husband, Cary, of Lake Charles; and one son: Eldon C. Blount and special family friend, Karyl O'Banion of Lake Charles; nine grandchildren: Kay Chesson, Laura (Brett) Domingue, Keri (Rob) Forbess-McCorquodale, Jeff (Jill) Forbess, Kevin (Jana) Smith, Darren (K.D.) Smith, Eric (Kelli) Blount, Blake Daugherty, and Ben Daugherty; and four great-grandchildren: Joshua, Jacob, Julianna Forbess and Ethan McCorquodale. Other survivors include her sisters Bonnie Case and Nell Hearn.

The family wishes to extend special thanks for the love and concern shown by her special friend and caregiver, Charlette Burd. They also wish to thank Grand Cove Care Facility and Brighton Bridge Hospice for the comfort, help, and support in so many ways. Her funeral service will be held at Hixson's Funeral Home in Lake Charles on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 4, from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM and Wednesday from 9:30 AM till time of service at the Hixson Funeral Home in Lake Charles. Dr. John White and Rev.
