After surviving the journey aboard ship SS Scythia, the family moved to Rothsey, Minnesota to pay of the ships fare, as cousin had loaned them. Ludvig died of diptheria in an epidemic that swept the area. He was buried in a common grave with other victims of the epidemic. The grave is just east and across the road from the country church that his parents attended. The burial site in 1977 was then a field of maturing wheat just east across the road from the Church. There was no marker, no pillar, nothing to indicate a mass grave site. There was only the golden wheat swaying in the summer breeze. Ludvig's death is recorded in the South Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rothsey, Otter Tail, Minnesota parish records for 1870 - 1911
