L. B. BATSON, age 83, one of the pioneer timbermen of this area, died at the Poplarville Hospital Sunday night following several years of bad health.
Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist church of Poplarville Monday afternoon with Rev. J. T. Horton, pastor, officiating. Rev. Horton was assisted by Rev. J. P. Culpepper, retired Baptist minister who had known Mr. Batson for many year, and Rev. S. F. Harkey, pastor of the Poplarville Methodist church. Interment was in the Poplarville cemetery with Colonial Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Batson was first engaged in the mercantile business. Later he entered the timber business, one of the first to do so in this section. He was in partnership with his brother, N. Batson, for many years. Later he entered partnership with Mr. McGehee to form the Batson-McGehee Lumber Co. Mr. Batson retired from business about 10 or 15 years ago and his interests were operated by his son, Otis Batson. The firm is still in operation at Millard.
Mr. Batson was married many years ago to Miss Rose Boyd and to this union was born three children, of which Otis is one. Mr. Batson survives her husband. He would have been 83 years of age in August.
