GALESBURG - Bernice Emma DiGiovanna, 94, former longtime resident of Springfield, went home to be with the Lord 7:45 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Rosewood Care Center.
She was born April 5, 1916, at Springfield, the daughter of William A. and Georgine (Busch) Sack. She attended Bunn, Immanuel and Trinity Lutheran Grade Schools and Springfield High School. She traveled to Liege, Belgium, and Paris, France, in 1930 with her mother, spending a year abroad and learning to speak French while meeting and living with relatives.
Bernice married Tony DiGiovanna on November 8, 1936. Bernice enjoyed music, dancing, travel, reading, baking, and spending time with her family. She was a homemaker and retired from the State of Illinois Department of Personnel in 1981.
She was a member of Trinity and Immanuel Lutheran Churches, Springfield, and Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Galesburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 66 years, sisters Louise Reinders and Helen Sack, baby daughter and son-in-law James M. Robertson.
Surviving are her daughters, Eva Jean Best of Springfield and Ruth Ann Robertson of Galesburg; and grandsons, Randall and Anthony Robertson of Galesburg.
Visitation will be held at Staab Funeral Home, Springfield, Monday, May 3rd at 10 a.m., funeral service following at 11 a.m. Monday May 3rd, and burial at Calvary Cemetery, Springfield, with Pastor Daniel Smith officiating. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Springfield, or Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Galesburg.
