Joseph Herrmann was the third child of Joseph W. HERRMANN and Theresia Kluge. His parents were both born in Germany and emigrated to the US in 1857. It is unclear if his father came over first then returned to marry Theresia. Records show their marriage in June of 1862 in Naumburg, Bunzlau, Schlesien, an area of what is now southwestern Poland.
Joseph was born in June of 1863 in Buffalo, New York. By 1887 at the age of 24 he had a butcher shop on Wasson St in Buffalo. He learned the trade from his father, also a butcher.

Joe died in November 1898 of pneumonia. He was predeceased by his wife Mary and an infant son who died in 1887, both of whom died of complications of birth.
