Third great grandchild of Rev. Thomas Hooker, founder of Hartford, Connecticut and daughter of Lieut. James Cowles and Abigail Hooker, she married Rev. James Richards, son of Capt. James Richards and Ruth Hanford, on May 9, 1794. Between them they had seven children;

Her mother would die 11 months after her birth. Her father would follow 17 years later, upon which she would be adopted, without legal form, by her uncle and aunt, Thomas and Anna (Hooker) Smith, who were without issue. She has been described as "delicate in appearance, pleasing in manner, intelligent, pious, sympathetic and devoted..."
