Jonothan was the son of John Thomas Knight and Susan Elizabeth Williams. He was a land owner, a director of the First National Bank in Commerce, and owner and operator of the Knight Brothers Grocery along with his brother Thomas. He was also a member of the Commerce Masonic Lodge.

He married Ella Virginia Carter on Feb. 2, 1893 in Sulpher Springs, Texas. They had the following known children:
