Former Resident of This City, a Sister of J. C. Armantrout, Passes Away – Burial Sunday.

Mrs. Alethia Armantrout Gaines, wife of Joseph Gaines of Jewett, died at the family home Saturday evening at seven o'clock.  Death was resultant from a fifteen years' invalidism from creeping[?] paralysis and was not unexpected.  The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at three o'clock from the Church of Christ in Jewett, with burial following in the cemetery there.

Mrs. Gaines was born in 1861 in Whitley township, being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Armantrout, well known residents several years ago of that neighborhood.  With her husband and family she formerly resided in Mattoon, moving to Jewett a number of years ago.

Besides the husband there survive four sons, Byron Gaines of Chicago, Victor, Leland and Max, the latter of whom sailed recently for France as a member of the United States Army.  All the sons except the last named were at the funeral services.  There also survive several brothers and sisters, J. C. Armantrout of this city, U. __ Armantrout, Nelson Armantrout and Morton Armantrout of Gays, Mrs. __ D. Lilly, Mrs. Araminta Reed of Sullivan and Mrs. Grace Quiett of Shelbyville, all of whom, with their families and a number of other relatives from Gays and vicinity, were present at the funeral.
