Paul John (twin brother of John Paul)
came from Georgia to Galveston, settling in Waller Co., in the mid 1800's. He was accompanied by his first wife, Elizabeth Susan Brack and their 6 children: Newton, Elizabeth Ann, William Henderson: Elijah Justin (Eli): Benjamin Franklin and Rebecca Jane.
Paul John is said to have been presented a tract of 200 acres of land by one Mr. Ennis if he would consent to live in Waller Co. When Paul moved to Texas, he brought a few slaves with him. He would sit under his favorite Sweet Bay tree to rest and watch his slaves work. He told his family that when he died he wanted to be buried under that same tree. His wishes were honored and that is the location of his grave. It has been said that he died in the fall of the year.
(story of Sweet Bay tree by his great grandson Raymond Sheffield)
Paul John was not a soldier in the Civil War but did scouting for the Confederate Army.

Paul John's twin brother, John Paul, is buried in Field's Store cemetery, Waller Co TX #15465256.

The twins came to Texas with their families before Texas won her independence from Mexico. Census taken July 12, 1860 lists them as living at Retreat TX. Before coming to Texas, the twins dealt in trading slaves- selling many slaves in Waller Co along the Brazos. After coming to Waller Co., John Paul owned and operated a general merchandise store, a cotton gin and a grist mill. John Paul married Dorcas Tabitha Cryer. When the slaves were freed, John's slaves refused to leave him. Later he moved to Waller and operated a store selling anything from "Baby Percy to Horse Collars." Kind hearted, generous and hospitable, John Paul and Dorcas reared 5 orphan children, besides their own thirteen. Tradition has it, but is not documented, that the twins descended from Henry VIII of England. The name of Henry has been carried through the generations. (much of the above info was by Mamie Berry who spent most of her life researching the Sheffield history) (After much research on Henry VIII, highly improbable that we descend from a man who is said to have no heirs.)
