William Thomas Ashe was born December 18, 1879 in Gloucester Co., VA, the fourth child of Lucy Hughes and William Ashe. He married Linwood Roane, daughter of Curtis Roane of Gloucester. As a young man, William ran a mercantile business. In 1917 he inherited his father's ferry franchise and two years later built a large ferry, the "Cornwallis", which ran twice an hour from Gloucester Point to Yorktown. At his death he left a large bequest to the Methodist Orphanage in Richmond, VA. William died October 11, 1938 in Boston, MA.
