Abraham and Rebecca moved to Rush County 1825 and then in 1831 Coles County in Illinois. In the 1850's they moved to Iowa.

LINCOLN'S SLANDER CASE, by - Mark E. Steiner:

On 14 October 1847 in Coles County, Illinois, Abraham Fleenor was represented by Abraham Lincoln in a slander suit brought against him by his son-in-law. John Linder.

Abraham Lincoln represented the defendant, who was accused by Linder of having slandered Linder, accusing him of perjury. It seems Linder had testified before the grand jury that Levi B. Fleenor & Emeline Fleenor, living together as husband & wife, were not lawfully married.

The Fleenor's claimed to have been married at Greencastle, Indiana, which fact Linder denied, stating the couple only stopped in Greencastle for 15 minutes and that Emeline did not even leave the wagon.

Lincoln argued this was no bar to a legal marriage if a preacher or squire were at hand to perform the ceremony. Lincoln's client, however, lost the suit & the Linder word prevailed...his being granted $1000 in damages (950. of which was remitted)

*NOTES: John Linder, Abraham & Levi B. Fleenor are thought to have been grandsons of Anthony & Mary Linder of SW,VA.
Levi & Emeline remained in Coles County, Illinois for the rest of their lives.

Abraham N. Fleenor moved on to Jefferson County in Iowa.

[In Linder v. Fleenor, Lincoln represented the defendant, who received an adverse judgment of $1,000. John Linder claimed that Abram Fleenor had said that he had lied before a grand jury. Lincoln in his defensive pleading claimed that Linder had lied, had committed "willful and corrupt perjury" before the grand jury when he testified that Levi Fleenor and Emeline Fleenor had lived together without being married. The jury found for Linder, but Lincoln successfully negotiated an advantageous conclusion of the case: Linder "remitted and released ... the sum of nine hundred and fifty Dollars of said verdict."113 Thus, Lincoln was able to mediate and settle some cases even after juries had returned verdicts in favor of plaintiffs].
