On 14 October 1847 in Coles County, Illinois, Abraham Fleenor was represented by Abraham Lincoln in a slander suit brought against him by his son-in-law. John Linder.
Abraham Lincoln represented the defendant, who was accused by Linder of having slandered Linder, accusing him of perjury. It seems Linder had testified before the grand jury that Levi B. Fleenor & Emeline Fleenor, living together as husband & wife, were not lawfully married.
The Fleenor's claimed to have been married at Greencastle, Indiana, which fact Linder denied, stating the couple only stopped in Greencastle for 15 minutes and that Emeline did not even leave the wagon.
Lincoln argued this was no bar to a legal marriage if a preacher or squire were at hand to perform the ceremony. Lincoln's client, however, lost the suit & the Linder word prevailed...his being granted $1000 in damages (950. of which was remitted)
