Her parents were Harley and Zimrode (Bicknell) Carter, the former a native of Connecticut and the latter of Rhode Island.
In 1857 the younger Zimrode married William Brown Foster.
They farmed for a time in the area, and took care of her ailing father.
They later moved into the old Foster home in Athens, where they raised ten children.
One grandson was Gov. John W. Brown of Ohio.
