Richard W. Bennett Dead

Richard W. Bennett, a pioneer resident of Benton township, died Monday at his home on North West street after a long illness, aged 81 years, one month and 13 days. The funeral will be held this afternoon at two o'clock, at the M. E. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Jesse A. Monkman. Interment will be at the Brooks cemetery.
Richard W. Bennett was born in New York state January 16, 1839, and departed this life March 1, 1920, at 11 a.m.. When six years of age he with his parents came west and settled in Illinois for some two years, when they came into Iowa, where he had made his home ever since, the last 60 years of his life having been spent in and around Hedrick.
Deceased was united in marriage in his earlier life to Miss Cornelia Smiley, who died some three years later, leaving two children, viz. C. D., of Delta, Iowa, and Mrs. Mary C. Ritter, of Hedrick, who followed her mother in death May 4, 1889.
Some years after the death of his first wife, Mr. Bennett was united in marriage to Mrs. M. J. Jaskill, of this county, and to this union were born two children, Mrs. Ida E. Meier, and Richard A. Bennett both of Hedrick. Besides his wife and above named children, Mr. Bennett leaves to mourn their loss 23 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and many friends and neighbors.
When 25 years of age the departed united with the M. E. church, remaining a consistent member up to the hour of death.

Note: I believe his 1st wife listed in obituary as Cornelia Smiley was in fact Camelia C.. There is a stone at Brooks cemetery for Camelia C., wife of R. W. Bennett. Died Nov. 29, 1865. His second wife is listed as Mrs. M. J. Jaskill. Her surname is spelled "Gaskill" in her obit. Not sure but I believe Gaskill is the correct spelling.
