Richard Francis Bassett* born at home on 19 Oct 1909, was the youngest of 5 children. After the death of his mother, Bertha Belle Eagle, in 1912, Richard was placed for adoption. Richard's adoption and change of name became final on 31 Dec 1915 and his name was changed to Richard Francis Bahls. Adoptive parents: Louis J. Bahls and Della Bassett Bahls (his Aunt and Uncle).
Richard enlisted in the United States Navy, June 29, 1926 and trained at NTS Hampton Roads, Virginia. He served aboard the U.S.S.Texas from October 12, 1926 to January 19, 1927; the U.S.S.Florida from January 19, 1926 to July 8, 1927; the U.S.S.Utah from July 8, 1927 to February 16, 1928; the U.S.S.Mercy from February 16, 1928 to February 28, 1928 and again on the U.S.S.Utah from February 28, 1928 to January 17, 1929. His last rank was Seaman first class. Richard was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy on October 17, 1929.
