George was the son of George Washington McLarty, Sr. and Charity Bates. He enlisted as a private in Co. C of the 30th Georgia Infantry on September 25, 1861. He was captured near Chattahoochee on July 16, 1864 and sent to Camp Chase on August 5, 1864. He died of chronic diarrhea on December 1, 1864 and is buried in grave #537, 1/3 mile south of Camp Chase.
