Norma Brown passed away April 25, 2010, at age 89 years, 5 months and 10 days in Marshall. She was born Nov. 15, 1920, in Ore City.

Norma Brown grew up in Marshall, attended Marshall public schools and participated in the Sheltered Workshop's weaving program. A member of First United Methodist Church, she also attended and felt close to the members of Crossroads United Methodist Church. She was one of the first patients at Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Shreveport, La. She was forever grateful for the treatment she received there for a congenital disability that slowed her steps, but didn't dampen her determination to be a positive force wherever she went. It was with pleasure that she revisited the facility decades later to see the good it did for so many other children with physical challenges. As a long-time resident of Marshall Manor, she was affectionately known as "Ms. Elvis Presley" for her enjoyment of the singer's music and memorabilia. She attended every activity - from riding on floats in parades to bingo games to trivia challenges. She was a member of the Red Hat society and served as President of the Resident Council. She was recognized for her participation in the Spanish language program and most recently was named a resident Volunteer for Cheer.

Miss Brown was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters: Rex Brown Sr., Dr. Wallace H. Brown, Lillian Brown McAdow, Esther Brown Hinson, Irma Brown; and niece, Ann Hinson Whiteley.

She is survived by her loving family, including Gail and Rex Brown II, Trish and Rex Brown III, Harrison Brown, Chase Brown, Allison and Sean Pollitt, Thomas Pollitt, Nancy and Ken Conwell, Jennifer and David Uygur, Caryn and Mike Barber, Ellie Barber, Luke Barber, Brooks Barber, Danny Brown, Dr. Harold Brown, Susan and John Broyles, Chad Blaylock, Monique and Reagan Blaylock, Brooke Blaylock, Lily Blaylock, Pamela Brown, Carolyn and George Mills, George Mills Jr., Clare Mills, Ellen and Lee Degges, Douglas Degges, Allen Degges, Martha and Sandy Hendrick, Margo and Jim Gooch, Marna Kowalczyk, Cynthia Whiteley, Paul Whiteley, and Margaret Lucht.

In lieu of flowers, Miss Brown requested that donations be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 3100 Samford Ave., Shreveport, La. 71103. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at Downs Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be conducted by Dr. David Snow at Colonial Gardens Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at 2 p.m. The family invites all who knew and loved Miss Brown to attend. Downs Funeral Home
