Dan grew up in Verona, N.J., and graduated from the Carteret School in West Orange, N.J. in 1946. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio in 1950. He earned a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1952 from what was then Newark College of Engineering and a Masters Degree in Physics from New York University in 1954.

After working for a time at Sylvania in Bayside, Long Island, NY, Dan joined Westinghouse Electric Company in 1955 at the Electronic Tube Division, Elmira, NY. In 1966 he was transferred to the Linthicum, MD, location where he was an engineer/manager working in Research and Development until he retired in 1994. During his career Dan received 46 U.S. patents. He was a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and its Microwave Theory and Techniques section.

Dan was active in Harundale Presbyterian Church from March 1966 until his disease made it impossible around 2002. He was an elder and sang in the choir, wrote and directed several religious plays, and served on many committees and projects. In retirement Dan volunteered many hours at the Historical Electronics Museum in Linthicum and for Volunteers for Medical Engineering in Baltimore. He loved sailing on the Chesapeake Bay on his Cal 24 "Skye" and was known for his drawing and sketching. He was a talented musician with perfect pitch and played both the trumpet and French horn.
