Crash kills local man
A 37-year-old Fairbanks man was killed and his wife injured when the airplane he was flying crashed near the Salcha River Sunday.
Dead is Joseph P. McNavish, 315 Antionette St. His wife, Geraldine, was listed in satisfactory condition today at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
Troopers said McNavish apparently was attempting to land the single engine plane at Butte Creek and the Salcha River about noon Sunday.
Investigation into the incident is continuing.

McNavish rites slated Friday
Memorial serices [sic] for Joseph P. McNavish, 37, who died Oct. 5, will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Chapel of Chimes.
McNavish who was employed as a plumber for Johnson Service Company was killed in the crash of a light plane near Salcha. His widow Geraldine was injured in the crash.
Survirors [sic] include his widow, three daughters Karen, Kimberly and Dana, all of Fairbanks and two sisters; Patricia Berryhill and Madge Strajier [sic], both of Fairbanks.
The family asked that in lieu of flowers donations go to a trust fund for Dana McNavish.**

** Dana's mother had German measles when Dana was born. As a consequence, Dana is totally deaf. In 1970, she attended a special class in the Fairbanks School for the Deaf and leads an otherwise normal and productive life.
