Dorothy (as she always called herself) was the only child of John Gibbons and S. Florence Curley Gibbons, born to them when they were aged 45 and 35, respectively. A cousin, Delma Schoene, was raised with her. Dorothy lived her entire life in Baltimore, graduating from Eastern High School and from a two-year business school.

She married W. Kenneth Nichols in 1931 at the Episcopal Church of St. Michael and All Angels, where she had met him (with a little help from his sister, Ruth.) Dorothy had worked as a secretary but lost her job after she married as a result of The Great Depression.

She was the mother of two children, Carol Florence and W. Kenneth, Jr. She was very active in the church, becoming known for putting on weekly seafood suppers during Lent and well-attended roast beef dinners once a year. She taught Church School and participated in the annual bazaars.

Her best friend from high school onward was Nannie "Nan" Johnson. In the 1950's, Nan appealed to Dorothy to help her at her job as a secretary for an obstetrical practice, and so they worked together until Dorothy's illness prevented it. Dorothy died of breast cancer a few minutes after the conclusion of her 52nd birthday.
