He resided at his old home until his marriage in March 1866 to Miss Adeline Allison. Immediately after his marriage, himself and wife reoved to Platt Co., Missouri and resided there 1 year, removing to Nemaha Co., Kan, where they lived two years. In spring of 1869 they came to Lincoln County. Mr. Shafer build a dugout about a hundred yards south of the "Big Spring" in the SE Quarter of Section 1, Town 12, Range 8. At the time of Indian raid in September he and his family were in the settlement around the locality now known as Bashan, or No. 15. Their principal loss was the destruction of the contents of the dugout by the Indians. Afterward they moved into Bashan neighborhood and here their home was up to the present time. Mr. Shafer took to his gun and horse as soon as the Indians were discovered at the time mentioned above and served as a independent volunteer during the subsequent troubles.
Mr. Shafer's mind became affected several years ago from brooding over an obscure stomach trouble, and during the last year it was thought to be best for himself and family that he be restrained. He was committed to the asylum as a consequence, escaping from thence three times in a few months, each time finding his way home and being taken back.
He was a very active, stirring and enterprising farmer, had good business judgment and accumulated a competence. He leaves a wife and 8 children, all of whom reside in this county.
The funeral was held at th No. 15 schoolhouse. Services were conducted by Rev. R. Arthur and the G.A.R. posts of Lincoln and Beverly attending in rank and assisting, his being a highly respected member of that order. The interment was made in the Lincoln Cemetery.
