Lucy Childs Benton has a CSA pension application on line under Newton County in the GA archives. She gives proof of marriage to Ossian Benton on May 4, 1871 in Jasper County. She says he enlisted in 1862 or 63 and served with Company C of the 27th Bat. Infantry. He was home on sick furlough when Sherman's Army came through town. He joined up with the Texas Rangers. Her pension was first disapproved as he was thought to be a desserter, but further proof was submitted. She says he died on March 13, 1918 before the law was changed in 1919.
