The birthplace of Elizabeth is confused by available reports: Her daughter Alice's death certificate claims her mother was born in MD. Additionally, a Wood County history profile of Alice's uncle, George W. Bell, calls Elizabeth Bell's home origin, "Ludlow County, MD," when there is no such county in MD but IS such a township in Washington County, OH.

It seems most likely that the sense of origin grew garbled in family retelling, as the Bell grandparents did live in Frederickstown MD (Frederick County MD) before moving to Washington County Ohio (with George born in Ohio). Siblings Joseph and Minerva Aplin each married Bell spouses in Washington County. The Aplins lived in Ludlow Township, Washington County, Ohio, while the Bells are now buried in Washington County's Rainbow Cemetery area that used to be called Union Township, but now is Muskingum Township.
