SIOUX CITY -- Vernon C. Heisler, 96, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, April 18, 2010, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Services were Friday at Riverside United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Janice Bennett officiating. Burial was in Grant Township Cemetery in Ticonic, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army.

Vernon was born Sept. 3, 1913, near Ticonic, Iowa, the son of John and Margaret (Shull) Heisler. He graduated from Smithland (Iowa) High School in 1932, and continued working on the family farm. Vernon served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater. After the war, he returned to work on the family farm. During 1950, he was married to Zoa Archer. She died in 1953.

Vernon was united in marriage to Ruth Clark on Feb. 8, 1969, in Brookings, S.D. They made their home in Sioux City. He retired from farming during the early 1970s. He worked for Donnely Marketing in South Sioux City and later at Scheels in Sioux City until retiring again in 1985. Vernon moved to Holy Spirit in May 2008.

Vernon was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; two stepsons, Robert Clark and his wife Karen of Le Mars, Iowa, and Ronald Clark and his wife Cheryl of Blaine, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Sandra and her husband Roman Langhoff of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Heisler of Ames, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margie Heisler and Mary Thompson; five brothers, Warren, John, Evans, Marchmont and Morris; two granddaughters; a grandson; and a great-grandson, Kyle Clark.
