Herman Paul Eckhardt was born December 13, 1847 in Laasphe, Siegen-Wittgenstein, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany to Carl Frederick Caesar Eckhardt and Louisa Christina Fisher-Eckhardt.

His first marriage on July 9, 1871 in Yorktown, Texas was to Pauline/Paulina A. Heissig (1853-1885)and they had at least the following children:

* Johanna Jane Eckhardt-Strieber (1874-1901) who married William Frederick Strieber on May 29, 1895 in Yorktown and they had at least 4 children: twins Norma and Norman; Leslie John Strieber, and Lucille Willie Strieber. Johanna died abt one month after Lucille Willie Strieber (the last born child) was born.
* Emma H. Eckhardt-Boal (1876-1918) who married John Lyman Boal on August 28, 1900.
* Herman Charles Eckhardt (1878-1949) who married Laura Jane Hudson in DeWitt County on September 17, 1900. Herman registered for the service during WWI. He was a Doctor of Dental Surgery (attained at Western University, Kansas City, Missouri,1901) and Doctor of Medicine (1906). He reportedly died of a heart attack on August 6, 1949 in Yorktown, DeWitt county, Texas.
*Frances Mathilda Eckhardt-Streiber (1882-1953) who married Andrew Adolph Streiber on June 17, 1903 in DeWitt County, Texas (both are buried in Westside Cemetery). Andrew was a younger brother of William Frederick Strieber
who married Frances Mathilda Eckhart's older sister: Johanna Jane Eckhart.
* Pauline Eckhardt-Sasse (1884-1965) who married Gustav Herman Sasse on April 18, 1906.

His first wife, Pauline/Paulina A. Heissig died shortly after their last child was born (Dec. 1884) in February 1885. Then Herman Paul Eckhardt married Pauline's younger sister, Jane "Jennie" Heissig and had at least four children from his 2nd marriage, being: Valeska Eckhardt (1887-1888), Alfred Eckhardt(1888-1893), Robert William Eckhardt (1890-1936) who married Mattie B. Manz, and Hildegarde "Hilda" Eckhardt (1893-1977) who married Otto William Ehlers.

His 2nd wife, (Pauline's sister) Jane "Jennie" Heissig-Eckhardt died on May 24, 1958 and was buried in Westside Cemetery (Yorktown, DeWitt, Texas).
