Joe was the youngest of 14 children. The father owned land in southern Washington County, Arkansas near Winslow and Sunset. It is likely that Joe was born near there. He married Nettie Parks on 14 July 1897 in Crawford County, Arkansas. The 1910 and 1920 US Census for Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas, show that Joe was a billing clerk at the railroad depot in Fayetteville. In 1930 and 1940, he had transferred to the depot in Van Buren, Arkansas as a ticket agent.
Joe and Nettie were the parents of three known children, Glenn G, Thelma Nelina and Carl G Henson
