Joseph was the son of Joseph Nickell I b 1750 VA. He served in the War of 1812 in Captain Archibald Morrison's Co 13th Infantry. He was taken prisoner in battle 6 May 1813, and was paroled at the mouth of the Huron River 14 May 1813. He settled at Matthew Ky ca 1813-1820 on a large tract of land 400-500 acres from the mouth of Rockhouse Creek to the mouth of Lacy Creek. Parts of "Big Joe's" farm has been owned by members of the Nickell family for over 150 years. He married 1) Sally Stewart and 2)Matilda Lindel. The following is a list of children. The first four are Sally Stewart's, but unsure about the others:

9. Amos Nickell b 1834
10. Isaac Nickell b 1836
