"Miss Julia Maddox, aged 21, a niece of ex-Commissioner Thomas Patrick's wife, was fatally burned on Wednesday last, and died at 2 o'clock on the following morning. She resided 7 miles northwest of Sidell, IL, and at the time of the accident, was washing clothes in the back yard where she was heating her wash water by an open fire. She ventured too near when her clothing caught fire and so seriously burning her before the flames could be extinguished by her brother, who happened to be nearby, that she died in a few hours. She was an estimable young lady." - Newport Hoosier State, Wednesday, August 14, 1901 (Obituary provided by Carolyn Schwab)
