James Calvin Moor was born in Vermont, the son of Thomas Moor and Elizabeth Joyner. After a disagreement with his parents, James Calvin left home and headed south where he is said to have joined the army of General Andrew Jackson in the battle of New Orleans. He was married Dec. 30, 1828 in Louisiana to Elvina or Lavinia Abshire, the daughter of Benjamin Abshier Sr. and his wife Hannah Weed. The Moor family, along with the Abshiers, came to Texas in the early 1840s. Although most of the Abshiers settled in the area between Devers and Hankamer in Liberty Co., TX, the Moors first settled on Taylor's Bayou in LaBelle, Jefferson County, Texas. They later settled in the area near Devers, Liberty County. James Calvin's tombstone includes an inscription that he fought with Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans.
