C. M. Cason was in the mercantile business in Montezuma, Tennessee from 1848 until about 1871. He was also in business in Henderson, Tennessee, starting in 1867. A democrat, he served at least two terms as register of Chester County, Tennessee. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.

Mr. Cason enlisted in the 31st Regiment, Tennessee Infantry of the Confederate Army in 1861, serving as captain under Col. Bradford of Brownsfield, Tennessee. He was in active duty until ill health caused him to leave the service in 1863.
