SHOTGUN DEATHS OF MAN AND WOMAN AT ATHERTONVILLE RULED MURDER, SUICIDE. - The deaths of Mrs. Mary Myrtle Bartley, 34, and her husband, Thomas Edward Bartley, 53, from shotgun wounds Friday morning at their home in Athertonville were ruled murder and suicide by LaRue County Coroner Lawrence Rogers. He said Bartley shot his wife in the head with a single barrel shotgun and then turned the gun on himself. The bullet struck him in the left lower chest. Both died instantly. Coroner Rogers, LaRue Sheriff Gilbert Raikes and State Police were summoned to the Bartley home shortly after the shooting, which reportedly occurred about 10:30 a.m. Two of the Bartley's children, Mary Ethel and Donna Jean, reportedly told the officers they had heard their parents arguing before the shooting. They were in the house at the time, but did not witness the shooting. The bodies were taken to Greenwell Funeral Home in New Haven and remained there until the double funeral at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine Church in New Haven. In addition to the daughters, Mary Ethel and Donna Jean, the Bartleys are survived by a son, John Thomas Bartley, at home. Marcum of Hodgenville; his mother, Mrs. Ethel Bartley, Athertonville; a brother, Ivo Bartley, Athertonville, and two sisters, Mrs. Germaine Florence, of Louisville, and Mrs. Gertrude Brown of Athertonville.
