On 18 Feb 1909, Radcliffe bought property on the westerly side of East Street in New Britain, Ct. from Herman F. Wells and erected a house there shortly after. This house still stands today, although it appears to have seen better days.
According to family tradition, he suffered great financial losses in the stock market crash of the 1920's and was forced to sell his property on East Street. He subsequently purchased the house at 1394 Stanley Street in New Britain with the financial support of his daughters, Carolyn and Marie. His family has speculated that he left a promising career at Stanley Works for more stable employment at A. C. Hine Co. because of this experience.
Radcliffe was among the first employed by the A. C. Hine Co., a Hartford Pontiac dealer, and he originally organized the Parts Department of which he was always the manager. Through his efforts over 40 years, Radcliffe was primarily responsible for the department's growth from an insignificant beginning to a substantial business covering most of New England.
