He was the son of James Gilkey Pendleton and Elizabeth "Betsey" (Philbrook) Pendleton (who are both buried in the Gaffield Cemetery, St. Alban's Twp., Licking County, Ohio). Darius married, firstly, Rachel Philbrook, his second cousin, in Islesborough, on 30 Oct 1837. She died at Benton Ridge, Hancock County, Ohio, on 24 Jul 1844, a few days after having given birth to her third child, John. Rachel is buried at the Benton Ridge Cemetery, Benton Ridge, Hancock County, Ohio. Darius married, secondly, Mary Ann Green, born 25 Sep 1824, daughter of William Green and Susannah Hummon, on 29 Aug 1844, in Hancock County, Ohio. Darius went by sea to California during the Gold Rush to mine gold. Darius was commissioned Lieutenant, First Class, of Company "G", 118th Infantry Regiment, Ohio Volunteers. When the regiment was incorporated into the federal army, he resigned his commission and took up duties with the Home Guard. Darius was a sailor, farmer and carpenter. He died 8 Sep 1876. During his life, he fathered three children by his first wife and twelve children by his second wife. He and Mary Ann were buried next to each other in Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio, Block "C", Lot 74, Spaces 1 and 2, respectively. I am the third great grandson of Darius and Rachel by their second child, Zilpha Pendleton, Mrs. George Semler.
