Joe was in the ROTC before joining the Marines. He was a very sharp dresser. He joined Carlson's Marine Raiders, G Company 2nd Raider Battalion, and served his country in WWII as an infantryman in the South Pacific. Joe saw action on Guadalcanal and was in on the Makin Island Raid. After leaving the Marine Raiders on September 1st 1943.Joe came back to the states and enlisted in the Marine Air Force.

As a fighter pilot in the Korean War he flew Corsairs in the Black Sheep Squadron. After 13 years in the Marines he was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain having received the Distinguished Flying Cross and many other military decorations.
Joe was able to attend Raider Reunions over the years including the Marine Raider Museum in Richmond Virginia in 1993 and the Raider Reunion in Minneapolis in 1993.
