William Alderts, at the age of 20, boarded the steamer "Rotterdam", sailing from the port of Rotterdam, Holland. Traveling in steerage, with 2 pieces of luggage, he arrived in the United States at New York on 11 October 1893. His destination was Cadillac, Michigan. He eventually continued westward and ended up in Washington state.

On 10 September 1918, at age 45, he registered for the draft. He was tall, medium build, with blue eyes, brown hair and balding. His address was Ephrata, Grant County, Washington, but at the time he worked for H. C. Thiemens in Espanola, Spokane County, Washington.

His last known permanent address before making a trip into Canada was at a Y.M.C.A. in Spokane, Washington. On 17 July 1919, with $60.00, he made his way to Kingsgate, British Columbia. The purpose of the trip was to operate a [mining?] claim he had interest in.

The 1920 census shows William back in Espanola, Spokane County, Washington, lodging with Rheinhard D. Thiemens and next door is Christoph H. Thiemens, his previous employer.

On 7 September 1909 his petition to become a U.S. citizen was accepted. He became a naturalized citizen on 24 August 1924.
