He graduated from Fredericksburg High School and was a member of the Methodist Church in Fredericksburg. He was employed as a clerk at the Princess Anne Hotel, Fredericksburg, VA, and at the air mail post office at National Airport, Washington, DC, before he entered the service in September 1944. He was killed in action while serving with the First Army, 16th Infantry Division.
He was predeceased by his mother, Rosa Lee Batton. He was survived by his father, James D Batton; his wife of 6 years, Eleanor Grade Bennawith; a daughter; and four brothers, Gilmer Gusta Batton, Ellis Scott Batton, Vivian Batton, and Dallas Lee Batton.
Repatriation of his remains, previously buried in Europe, and interment at Arlington National Cemetery on July 20, 1949.
