James married Martha Elizabeth Morgan in Georgia and they moved to Louisiana. The 1870 Census lists James with wife Martha, with children Duan, Mary, Samuel (Elisha), and Ada. The census taker must have made a mistake because James and Martha are listed as black but the children are white. Martha died around 1871. James then married Margaret Gregory on January 19, 1875, in Limestone County and had Daisy Rosetta. Margaret died shortly after childbirth and James married Luvinea Little Parks on June 11, 1875, in Limestone County and they had Edgar, John Wesley, and Sidney.
