Mamie L. Nofer Smitley, 91, of Berne died at 8:48 a.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Swiss Village in Berne. She was a homemaker, and helped her husband Chalmer with farming for many years. She was born in Van Wert, Ohio, on July 17, 1915, a daughter of Charles and Martha (Grund) Nofer. She was married in Van Wert on April 17, 1937 to Chalmer L. Smitley, who preceded her in death in 1981.She is survived by her children, Darlene (Jerry) Bailey of Bluffton, Richard (Beverly) Smitley of Berne, her step-son Jack (Sally) Lawson of Fort Wayne, and her step-daughter Betty (Don) Rump of Florida, along with eight grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by brothers Francis, Albert and Henry Nofer.Calling will be on Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Swiss Village, and one hour before services at the church on Monday. Services will be on Monday at 10 a.m. at Bethel Brethren Church, with Rev. Joe Nass officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are through Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne. Memorials may be made to Gideons International or Swiss Village.
